The need to integratein situ conservation into the planning process is outlined, and the importance of vegetation survey to determine conservation priorities and to identify areas suitable forin situ conservation is stressed. A case is presented, drawing on experience gained in Zimbabwe, of how a botanical institute can become an integral part of biological conservation. The institute should consist of a herbarium, a botanical garden, a gene bank and a vegetation survey unit. The gene encoding the porcine growth hormone (GH) has been localized to the q-arm of chromosome 12 using high-resolution R-banded chromosomes for in situ hybridization. We report here the localization of GH on the p-arm of this chromosome when using in situ hybridization on high-resolution G-banded chromosomes. Sequential Q- and R-banding show that this discrepancy is caused by a reversed orientation of chromosome 12 in the R-banded high-resolution karyotype published by Rønne et al. DISC1 gene polymorphisms and the risk of schizophrenia in an Iranian population: A preliminary study

Background: Schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar illness are common psychological disorders with high heritability and variable phenotypes. The disrupted in schizophrenia 1 ( DISC1) gene, on chromosome 1q42, has an essential role in neurite outgrowth and cell signaling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; rs6675281, rs2255340, and rs2738864) with schizophrenia disorder. These three SNPs were chosen as they had been used in most of the previous studies. Methods: In a case-control study of Iranian population for the first time 778 blood samples were collected including, 402 schizophrenic patients and 376 healthy controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood using DNA extraction kit (BioFlux Co). The genotypes of rs6675281, rs2255340, and rs2738864 were detected by nested allele-specific multiplex polymersae chain reaction (PCR). Results: Our data revealed that the three SNPs are significantly associated with schizophrenia (rs2255349 C>T: confidence interval (CI), 2.115 to 3.268; P = 0.0000 OR: 2.629; rs2738864 C>T: CI, 1.538 to 2.339; P = 0.0000 OR: 1.897; rs6675281 C>T: CI, 2.788 to 4.662; P = 0.0009241 OR: 3.605). Through applying the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, we calculated the haplotype frequency, and finally performed haplotype analysis with Bonferroni correction and data preprocessing methods and the results showed rs66875281 to have the highest association. Discussion: Our findings primarily showed that DISC1 gene polymorphisms contribute to schizophrenia risk and have a significant association with this disorder among Iranian population. The strategy was found to be easy, rapid, specific, and consistent for the co-occurring detection of the DISC1 polymorphisms. As a conclusion, this paper reviews briefly the content of the volume. The wealth of demographic data has not been adequately
exploited in anthropology; this is why this publication is valuable in showing attempts to apply demographic data in a variety
of anthropological problems. This symposium has explored many interesting points which we recall here. Yet it has also opened
up a whole range of further questions on the material presented as well as in this broad field. Several directions of research
could be developed, for instance, testing among human populations, over long periods, the ecological thoughts of ecosystems
evolving as a cascade of instabilities, rather than a succession of equilibrium states. Let us also recall the pervasive nature

Eight cases of African siderosis primarily recognized on cytological smears are presented and discussed. All the smears were obtained from Jamshidi needle biopsies of vertebral bodies. Six cases showed siderosis only, while a seventh showed two pathological processes on one slide, namely metastatic keratinizing squamous carcinoma and siderosis. The remaining case showed cytological evidence of tuberculosis and siderosis. All cases were histologically confirmed, an additional feature in two cases being osseous tuberculosis which was not evident on the cytological smears. A search of the literature failed to reveal any report on the cytological recognition of this disease, or its association with tuberculosis. 相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the relationship between the pretherapy characteristics of leukemia cells and their behaviour during culture in vitro. Leukemia cells which proliferated well in vitro also proliferated well in vivo. Cells which manifested myeloid or monocytic differentiation in vivo tended to manifest differentiation along these lines in vitro. Cells which manifested high levels of expression of c-fms, c-fes, or triose phosphate isomerase prior to culture were likely to differentiate in vitro, with high levels of c-fes expression being related to myeloid maturation. These observations suggest that differentiation at the molecular level prior to culture is a requisite for leukemia cell differentiation in vitro. The same may be true for differentiation in vivo under the influence of exogenously administered agents such as cytotoxic chemotherapy or recombinant growth factors. 相似文献

将东方大黄蜂(胡蜂)蛹或幼蜂的棕色表皮层连同含有黑色素的皮细胞层、黄色表皮层及相连的产生黄嘌呤的皮细胞层割下,换化后植入原来的黄蜂体上(原来是黄色的部分用棕色替代,棕色的用黄色替代)。然后将蛹放回原来的子脾中,幼蜂放入一特殊的培养皿中,让其复原和发育。共对200个不同时期的蛹和50只幼蜂进行了试验。结果显示,存活的最主要是将羽化的蛹(差1—2天就羽化的蛹),早期的蛹和幼蜂均死亡。总共有约5%的蛹存活,幼蛹无一存活。在存活的蛹中,棕色表皮植入黄色区域中的不但成活了,而且还保留了棕色色彩。相反,黄色表皮在植入到棕色区域的几天后,就丢失了黄色及膜片。经过表皮异源移植的大黄蜂寿命极短,一般仅几星期。羽化后较敏感,攻击性强,但行走、飞行都很正常[动物学报51(6):1146—1150,2005]。 相似文献

Summary Inflorescence proliferation is a plant tissue culture technique that, can be used to obtain in vitro inflorescences year-round without the intervening development of vegetative organs. In this study, we used albino mutant
inflorescences of Dendrocalamus latiflorus as the original explant material to investigate, the effect of plant growth regulators on long-term inflorescence proliferation.
The albino inflorescences proliferated on solidified Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with thidiazuron (TDZ),
and the optimal concentration for successful long-term inflorescence proliferation was 0.45 μM TDZ. A combination of α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) with 0.45 μM TDZ inhibited the inflorescence proliferation. Inflorescences cultured on a TDZ-free medium supplemented with 26.82 μM NAA rooted in 21 d, vegetative shoots formed by 42 d and, in one case, flowering occurred after 63 d. The auxins 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic
acid (2,4-D, 4.52 μM) and pieloram (4.14 μM) induced shoot formation. The protocol described can be used to produce large numbers of mutant inflorescences within a relatively

The interactions of model proteins with porous matrices in biosensors are considered. The viscoelastic properties of casein and albumin were assessed by a dynamic method of a piezoquartz resonator by applying thin layers of the studied solutions to a piezocrystal. The experimental data on the viscoelastic characteristics of protein solutions of various concentrations were compared with the characteristics of their tangential motion in the porous carriers of cellulose nitrate. It was demonstrated that the parameters of dynamic viscosity correlated with the motion time of the protein solutions in the porous polymeric carrier. 相似文献
